I have story for you that routinely reminds me that quiet whispers are the North star.
Let’s imagine somebody you love is extremely ill. You have fought for years to fight off the illness. Your fight has been filled with tears, chills, excitement, hope and defeat. For years. The road is getting harder to walk. The hills are steep. The false-summits have been numerous and, now, the wind is increasing, the sun is setting, cold is taking over and the hill still climbs on. You are tired and the battle against the cancer continues. You are losing and your loved one is losing too.
Time is running out. You have one option that you know will not be a cure, but that may give you another day to fight. This time, however, you decide to pass and drive to another Hospital to beg for a better option to keep your child alive. When you arrive you learn there is a clinical trial that just opened that your daughter could qualify for. This trial has never been tested on children. A few adults, but never a child. This treatment is radical and promises radical results - yet nothing is proven. You have to take the path blind.
You decide to enroll in the trial and your very sick daughter gets the experimental treatment. Her body and the hard work of many researchers are now on their own to fight the cancer. And a fight they get. Days and weeks of a war. Yet, with the help of amazing doctors, a faith that can not be depressed and love that never dims, you are brought to a point where the clouds start to clear. Your daughter’s cancer can no longer be found in her body. The cancer has lost the fight.
You can not tell me that Quiet Whispers do not exist. You can not tell me that a path, of which I have only told you only so little about, could have been traveled without being uniquely attentive to the quiet whispers of the Spirit.
In the last 4 years I have had the great gift of knowing the family who lived this story. I get to see routinely their commitment to the treatment that saved their daughter and the doctors who helped light the path in the darkest of times. I have seen them help other patients, other families, government officials, companies and so many others to increase funding for childhood cancer research.
If you watch this video - I promise it will change your life.
If you read this article - I promise it will increase your hope in the fight against cancer.
If you meet this family - I promise you, like me, will feel that some people hear the whispers louder than others.
Here is to great stories,
